How to make a burger patty

Making your own burger patties is really simple. Add the mine, finely chopped onion, garlic and an egg together and that’s your base.

Mixing them together starts to look like a sloppy mess but stick with it as it will all come together.

This is the time to add some spice. If you like your burgers with some spice then have a look at Spicentice. Their burger mix is spicy with that hint of bbq that we all love.

They send out packets of spices with easy to follow instructions so you can make a meal from scratch.

They are great to use if you are new to cooking from scratch or if you are looking to get your family eating new budget-friendly meals and have no clue where to start.

We tried them at the start of this year and loved them. We got stuck in a food rut and they helped by giving us ideas while keeping our food budget really low.

We made the below meals using Spicentice. Try them for yourself here:

Chili Flakes

Paprika

Black Pepper

Red Onion

These homemade burgers are great if you are on Slimming World too. They are low in fat and because you are making them from scratch you know exactly what is going into them.

What to have with your homemade burgers

We love to have homemade chips or wedges with corn on the cob with our homemade burgers.

Making chips from scratch is really easy!

For four people you:

Peel and chop four potatoes into chip size pieces. You can also use sweet potato if you prefer.

Add them to a large pan and boil for 10 to 12 minutes.

Drain the chips and “rough them up”. This gives the chips some texture and crunch.

At this stage, we use a deep fat fryer like this one here. Using a deep fat fryer to cook homemade chips means that you get a lovely soft inside and crunchy outside. A bit like chip shop chips.

Add a hand full to the deep fat fryer and fry for about 10 minutes. Tip them out onto kitchen roll then fry the rest.

Re-add the cooked chips for a second time. This makes them extra soft inside. Fry them for only a few minutes this time then serve.

If you are on Slimming World or don’t like the sound of a deep fat fryer then you can oven cook the chips too. Lay them on greaseproof paper and spray them with a low-fat oil. This is also the time to add any extra spices to your chips.

Put them in the oven for around 30 minutes at 200 degrees then serve.

Homemade beef burgers

This hamburger recipe is really simple to make and great if the kids want to help too. You can make these the night before and store them in the fridge, covered for the next day as well.

You can even make these burgers for a bbq. Make them small, about the size for a golf ball them squash as per the recipe details below. That way they won’t break when you need to slip them. Also, if you are cooking on the bbq we’d suggest you fridge the burgers first to keep them firm for longer.

The below is a homemade spicy beef burger recipe but you can easily ignore the spices and the burgers still taste amazing and keep their shape.

The ingredients for our homemade beef burgers recipe are:

500g beef mince meat £1.99

1 onion 8p

2 garlic cloves 6p

1 egg 10p

Pinch of salt 3p

6 burger buns 56p

Lettuce 25p

Tomato 50p

Cheese slices 35p

4 potatoes 40p

Total: £3.92 (All prices from Aldi and correct at time of publishing)

You can easily use whatever you have in your cupboards for this recipe. We’ve had the burgers with our own spices and with Spicentice. Both taste amazing.

Finely grate the onion and garlic then fry it off for a minute or two.

In a large bowl add the mince, the cooked onion and garlic, egg and any spices you want to use. Remember if you want some spicy and some plain to use two different bowls to separate the mixture.

Mix it all together with your hands. It will seem sloppy at first but keep going in till it all comes together in a big ball.

Make six to eight round balls, depending on how big you would like the burgers. We make them the size of golf balls as they are easy to flatten but whatever size will work for you.

Flatten the balls into burger shapes.

If you are cooking these later or on the bbq then cover the burgers and chill for 30 minutes or overnight.

Heat up your bbq or grill. If you prefer to oven bake then heat up the oven to 200 degrees.

Cook the burgers on both sides. They should take about 4 minutes on either side.

We enjoy ours with salad, cheese and a spicy sauce with homemade chips and corn on the cob.
