Free baby on board badge
In London, Transport for London (TfL) offers a thoughtful initiative aimed at supporting expectant mothers and parents with young children: the free “Baby on Board” badge. This badge is designed to make it easier for those travelling on the Underground to identify themselves as needing a seat. By wearing this badge, individuals can signal to fellow passengers that they may require assistance or a place to sit, particularly during busy commuting times.
To obtain a “Baby on Board” badge, parents can simply request one through the TfL website or at any Underground station. The application process is straightforward and aims to provide reassurance and comfort for new parents navigating the often crowded transport system. This initiative not only fosters a more considerate environment but also encourages awareness among all passengers about the needs of those travelling with young children. With this small yet impactful gesture, TfL continues its commitment to making public transport in London accessible and accommodating for everyone.
Free Magazines
You’ll find, as soon as you tell one company you are pregnant, they will all find out. Instead of throwing these brochures or magazines away, have a flick through. There’s normally tons of money off vouchers (like £5 off a £15 baby clothing spend in Tesco), free baby food coupons, free nappies, wipes, mini Johnsons products and sometimes a branded product like a towel, baby socks or spoons.
Rewards Program
With Bounty, we receive three distinct packs beginning as soon as we confirm our pregnancy.
The Pregnancy Information folder comes with a convenient carry case, ensuring that our important notes and documents remain organised. Inside, we find valuable samples like pregnancy vitamins and moisturisers, along with discount vouchers to help us save.
Upon downloading the Bounty app, we can collect the Mum to Be pack filled with essential items at Tesco (excluding smaller Tesco Express stores). This pack typically includes free full-sized Tesco Fred and Flo nappies, baby wipes, and laundry products, as well as additional information and vouchers.
Our journey continues with the Newborn pack, which we can pick up from the maternity ward. This pack contains samples such as nappies, baby wipes, and nappy cream, alongside a CH2 form necessary for applying for Child Benefit and coupons to facilitate future purchases.
Financial benefits to help your family
If you are having a baby, then make sure that you are claiming for everything that you are entitled for.
Statutory Maternity Pay:
Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is a key entitlement for employees in the UK who are expecting a child. It provides financial support during maternity leave, ensuring that new mothers can take time off work without facing significant financial hardship.
To qualify for SMP, employees must have been employed by their employer for at least 26 weeks by the end of the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth. They must also earn at least £123 per week on average (as of 2023). Once these conditions are met, eligible employees can receive SMP for up to 39 weeks.
The payment structure consists of two parts: for the first six weeks, recipients receive 90% of their average weekly earnings before tax. Following this period, they will receive either £172.48 per week or 90% of their average weekly earnings (whichever is lower) for the remaining 33 weeks. It’s important to note that SMP is subject to income tax and National Insurance contributions.
Employees should inform their employer about their pregnancy and intention to take maternity leave at least 15 weeks before the baby is due. This allows employers to make necessary arrangements and ensures that mothers receive their entitlements promptly.
Understanding how Statutory Maternity Pay works is crucial for expectant parents as it helps them plan financially during this significant life change while also ensuring they are aware of their rights and entitlements within the workplace.
Maternity Allowance
If you are not eligible for SMP, then you may be entitled to MA which involves:
- £184.03 a week or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is less) for 39 weeks
- from £27 to £184.03 a week for 39 weeks – how much you get increases with each Class 2 National Insurance contribution you make
- £27 a week for 14 weeks (if you do unpaid work for your spouse or civil partner’s business)
Child Benefit
Child Benefit is a government payment designed to help families with the costs of raising children in the UK. It is available to anyone responsible for a child under 16, or under 20 if they are in approved education or training. The benefit is typically paid monthly and can provide significant financial support.
To qualify for Child Benefit, you must reside in the UK and have parental responsibility for a child. The amount received depends on the number of children you have; as of 2023, families receive £24 per week for the eldest child and £15.90 per week for each additional child.
It’s important to note that while Child Benefit is not means-tested, it may be subject to tax if your income exceeds £50,000 per year. This is known as the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC), which requires individuals earning above this threshold to pay back some or all of their benefit through their self-assessment tax return.
To apply for Child Benefit, you can complete an online application through the government website or submit a paper form if preferred. Once your application is processed, payments will be made directly into your bank account.
Understanding how Child Benefit works can provide essential support during the early years of raising children, helping families manage their finances more effectively.
Healthy Start vouchers
Healthy Start vouchers are a government initiative in the UK designed to support low-income families with young children and pregnant women. These vouchers provide financial assistance to help purchase essential food items, such as fruits, vegetables, and milk, ensuring that families can access nutritious foods during critical stages of development.
Eligible individuals receive vouchers worth £3.10 each week for children under four years old and for pregnant women. To qualify for Healthy Start vouchers, applicants must be receiving certain benefits, such as Universal Credit or Income Support. The application process is straightforward; individuals can apply online or through their healthcare provider.
Once approved, recipients can use the vouchers at participating retailers across the UK. In addition to physical vouchers, there is also a digital option available via an app that allows users to redeem their benefits more conveniently.
The Healthy Start scheme not only aims to alleviate financial strain but also promotes better health outcomes by encouraging families to consume a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients. This initiative plays a crucial role in supporting vulnerable populations and fostering healthier communities throughout the UK.
Maternity exemption certificate
A Maternity Exemption Certificate in the UK is a valuable document designed to provide financial relief for expectant mothers during their pregnancy and after childbirth. This certificate exempts eligible women from certain NHS charges, including prescription fees, dental treatment, and eye tests.
To qualify for a Maternity Exemption Certificate, you must be pregnant or have had a baby within the last 12 months. You can apply for the certificate through your midwife or doctor, who will provide you with an application form. Once submitted, the NHS will issue your certificate if you meet the eligibility criteria.
Once you receive your Maternity Exemption Certificate, it is valid for 12 months from the expected date of delivery. It’s essential to carry this certificate with you when accessing services that are covered under this exemption. If you’re unsure about what services are included or how to use the certificate effectively, healthcare providers can guide you on how to navigate these benefits.
By understanding how the Maternity Exemption Certificate works and ensuring that you have one during your pregnancy journey, you can alleviate some of the financial pressures associated with maternity care in the UK.
