How to cook a gammon joint in a slow cooker

It is really easy to cook a gammon joint in the slow cooker. You do not need to pre-cook the gammon at all. Start by heating the slow cooker on low, then adding your gammon to the pot. This is the point when you would add your sauce ingriedents to the pot as well.

The great thing about a slow cooker is that you can dump all your ingredients into the slow cooker in the morning and come home to a healthy meal, ready-made.

A slow-cooked gammon can be cooked in a load of different ways. Below are our favourite 7 ways you can cook gammon in a slow cooker.

Can you overcook gammon in a slow cooker?

Yes, you can overcook your gammon but it is very diffcult to do that. The more you cook the gammon, the harder and cripsier the outside will be. We tend to cook ours for 4-5 hours on high to make sure we get a crisp outside but a tender middle.

Do you leave the plastic on gammon in a slow cooker?

No, please do not leave the plastic on the slow cooker. Doing this will cause the pastic to melt onto the gammon. Always completly unwrap the gammon before you cook it in the slow cooker.

Do I need to soak a gammon joint before cooking?

No, you do not need to soak the gammon. Put the gammon straight into the slow cooker, no pre-cooking or oaking needed, then add any sauce or spices to it then.

What is the best way to cook gammon in the slow cooker?

There are so many ways that you can cook a gammon in a slow cooker but our favourite is with diet coke. It makes the outside of the gammon really sticky and the inside of the gammon really juicy and tender.

Don’t be worried if you’ve brought a smoked or unsmoked joint. Both of them are great for the recipes below. It really is down to taste.

We buy the boneless gammon joints but whatever you have, as long as it fits into your slow cooker will work. You may have to adjust the cooking times though. Prep time is pretty much nothing at all.

If your joint comes wrapped in string then keep it on till after the joint is cooked.

Top tips for using your slow cooker

When you cook any sort of meat, make sure that you are remembering all your food safety. These are:

– Check your gammon with a meat thermometer. The gammon should be 71 degrees to be good to eat. Make sure you test the ham joint in the very middle.

– Please remember to wipe down your food surfaces and to not swap knifes. Use one for your meat and a different on for your vegetables.

– If you have a lot of liquid at the bottom of your slow cooker, then take the lid off 30 minutes before the end of the cooking time. This can help some of the liquid to evaporate.
