When you think about all of the money that you have to spend on for large purchases, then it can feel a little overwhelming. And these are for things that you need to spend on. For example, if you commute, you need to buy your annual train pass. If you work from home, then you will need to spend on a computer or laptop. Things like home insurance are a must too, but none of these things can ever be described as cheap. So a really good place to start is by calculating how much you will need to save each month, in order to get enough for the goal that you have. For instance, if you have a wedding to pay for, there are plenty of things that you can do to keep costs to a minimum. But you could make a plan to save £200 a month for eighteen months, and then it would get you to £3600. It does sound like a lot of money, and in reality, it is a lot of money.
In reality, there are no shortcuts to savings. But making the time and effort, as well as having plenty of patience, can be a way to make things happen. Here are some things to help you to save on the large purchases that you need to make.
Pay Yourself First
Being able to hit your savings goals isn’t always going to be achievable in the allotted time that you have set for yourself. But whatever happens, pay yourself first. It is such a good idea to set up a direct debit or automatic transfer when you get paid, that goes from your current account to your savings account. Then the money can be out of sight and out of mind, and it will be easier to save and keep that money aside for large purposes, rather than being tempted to dip in and buy other things with it.
Shop Around
For whatever you need to purchase, it pays to shop around. Although some things that you need to buy might be time pressured, try to take your time to make sure that you have shopped around. From looking for a used Range Rover rather than a new one, to using comparison sites, you can definitely make sure that you are able to get the best deal when you take time to look for it. Large purchases are just that, large. But you can get a good deal, rather than having to pay through the nose for it.
Start Small
Some large purchases, especially if you have things like a new car to get, can feel like a long way off. But sometimes the best thing to do is to start small with the purchases. If it feels like a lot of money to put aside something like 20% of your income each month for the car, then just do what you can. Some purchases can take longer to get to. But you will get there eventually.
