Whether your car has seen better days or your family is growing, buying used can be a savvy way to upgrade your car. However, the overall price of a car comes down to more than the initial purchase – there’s also all the running costs to consider.
Fortunately, we’ve done the hard work for you and found some of the most affordable and fuel-efficient used cars on the road, so you can save money all round.
The Nissan Micra
While the Micra has been around since 1982, if you’re looking for excellent fuel efficiency as well as a low price, then search for the model released between 2003 and 2010. Available with enough features (like cruise control and air conditioning) to make the interior feel modern and comfortable, it also offers impressive fuel economy – the 1.5 model tops 63mpg.
A second-hand model can be found for less than £2,000, making it a popular choice in the used car market.
The Fiat Panda
Manufactured from 2004 to 2011, the Panda offers excellent fuel efficiency, cheap road tax and a low insurance bracket. While this may not be the most visually appealing of all the small cars on the road – it’s quite boxy – its signature shape does little to dent its running costs. In fact, top of the list is the 1.3 model, which offers an average of 65mpg.
Depending on age and mileage, you could pick up one of these for around the £1,500 mark – not a bad score for a savvy shopper!
The Ford Fiesta
A popular choice with professionals and young families alike, the Ford Fiesta is compact, stylish and economical. On the 2008-2013 trim, the 1.6 diesel offers up to 55mpg, making it a cheap car to run. It’s also got a reputation for being reliable and fun to drive – sounds like a win-win as far as used cars go!
You can expect to find one of these for around £3,000, depending on spec and mileage.
The Smart Forfour
Quirky in looks and filled with personality, the Smart car range is popular with those who want something fun. Additionally, the variant produced between 2007 and 2007 is a great option for penny pinchers, too. This practical model is available with five doors and whether you opt for diesel or petrol, you can expect an average fuel economy of over 60mpg.
Similar to the Micra, expect to pay around £2,000 if you’re looking for a model with lower mileage.
The Toyota Yaris
Known for its reliability and excellent build quality, the Yaris remains one of the most popular used cars around. If you’re not too picky about gadgets and are simply searching for a good run around, buy the series from 1999 to 2005. While this may be a little older, it has a low insurance group and depending on the engine size, boasts fuel efficiency around 55mpg.
This Yaris is also the cheapest in our list, with older models that can be found for around £1,000.
There you have it – five of the most affordable and economical used cars you can buy. Now you know what you’re looking for, you can search dealers like Imperial Car Supermarkets. Just make sure you carry out used car checks before buying!
