Today we are going to clean your stainless steel kitchen sink using only what you have in your kitchen cupboards, without cutting any of your cleaning power.
Impossible? No way!
How often should you clean your sink?
The rule of thumb is:
• Quick rinse/sanitisation daily
• Deep clean after 30 uses (I average about once a month!)
Best cleaner for your stainless steel sink
Cleaning a sink isn’t difficult, and doesn’t require specialist expensive cleaners. I use:
200g Baking Soda – 90p
Abrasive enough to scrub away any deposits, whilst protecting your finish.
568ml White vinegar – 39p
Naturally disinfects, whilst also getting rid of hard water stains.
Lemon Peel (optional) – 30p
Deodorises the sink and smells good. It’s not essential, but if you have a garbage disposal as part of your sink, this is a good way to get rid of any smells.
1lt Olive Oil (optional) – £3.50
Buffs it up to a high shine and can protect the finish for longer.
These ingredients can be found around your home and make really good cleaners at a fraction of the cost. Vinegar is a great all-purpose cleaner.
Baking soda is gentle enough to use as a mild abrasive in many areas of your home.
Lemons have a natural bleaching ability.
The good thing is that you probably already have all these, so don’t need to go out and buy more, or spend your hard earned cash on expensive sprays, when these will do it for you.
How to clean your stainless steel kitchen sink
Clear anything from around the sink area, such as a dish drainer, soap, sponges etc. Admire the water stains and wonder why you decided to start this project. Start by wiping up any obvious food crumbs, stains etc. with a sponge.
Step 1: Clean your kitchen sink with baking soda
Sprinkle your sink with baking soda.
Grab a wet sponge and scrub the sink.
Move the sponge in small circles. The powder should form a paste.
Take a toothbrush to any small spaces
Tackle areas of the sink that have hard water stains with a toothbrush to get into small areas.
Wipe the baking soda up with a cloth
Wipe away all traces of the baking soda paste!
Step 2: Clean your sink with white vinegar
Grab a bottle of white vinegar.
You can get this at any supermarket.
Soak some kitchen towel with vinegar
You don’t want it to disintegrate, but you do want it to be wet.
Cover your sink in the towels
Try and get every surface, including the tap.
Leave it to rest for twenty minutes! Go and have a cup of tea 🙂

Step 3: shine that sink!
The next two steps are optional, but will really help buff your sink and make it shine!
First, take a lemon peel and rub it around the sink. If you have a garbage disposal you can drop the lemon peel into it when you’re done to help it smell nicer.
Then, wipe clean the lemon with a sponge.
Finally, apply a little bit of olive oil to a sponge or cloth and gently buff the entire sink.
Stand back and admire!
