How LED Lighting Can Save You Money

Sharing is caring!

If you’re all about saving money on your energy bills, the chances are that you have already heard about the benefits of LED lighting. However, if you haven’t, or if you’re wondering exactly how LED lighting can save you money, don’t worry – we’re here to tell you!

What are LEDs?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diodes, and they are one of the most efficient types of bulbs available on the market. LED bulbs last for up to five times longer than a CFL bulb, and they use far less energy than a halogen bulb, making them a great alternative to the traditional household lighting methods. LED bulbs are incredibly versatile and they are available in a range of styles and bulbs. You can use LED bulbs to create soft mood lighting, powerful task lighting and everything in between.

Why do LEDs Save Money?

LEDs save money as they use much less energy than incandescent, halogen and CFL bulbs. For example – you can replace a 60w halogen bulb with a 9w LED bulb. The LED bulbs also last much longer – 20,000 hours in comparison to 2000 hours for halogen bulbs. They are less likely to shatter and break, due to a lack of heat, unlike traditional bulbs.

Like LED lights but think they're expensive? Then think again.

Initial Cost

Traditionally, LED bulbs have always been more expensive initially than halogen bulbs. However, thanks to them becoming more widely available from lighting retailers, the price is gradually reducing to make converting to LED an affordable option.  If you are a business owner who is planning to switch to LEDs, you can benefit from tax savings from HMRC. You can expect to pay around £3 for a 5w LED bulb – the brightness is comparable to a 50w halogen bulb.

Savings

It’s estimated that by converting to LED bulbs, you could save up to £30 a year on your energy bills. If you are a business owner, the savings could be even more significant. To calculate how much LED bulbs can save you, you’ll need to know the current wattage of your bulbs, how long they are in use for each day, your electricity rate, and the cost of replacing each bulb with an LED equivalent.

Choosing the Right LED Lighting for Your Home

Once you have made the decision to switch to LED lighting, the fun part is choosing the lighting. As LED lighting is highly customisable, you can choose all kinds of colours and styles. In the kitchen, you could have undercabinet lighting, which will provide a bright focused light whilst you’re cooking. In your living room, you could place a strip of colour-changing lighting around your TV. In the dining room, you could have pendant LED lighting with a dimmable switch to control mood lighting whilst eating and socialising. In your garden, you can opt for recessed decking lights that look stylish and keep you safe whilst you are enjoying your garden at night.

Have you already made the switch to LED? Or are you currently weighing up the initial cost and the potential savings before you invest?
