#Week One Family Meal Diary – Loch, Stock and Two Screaming Kids

#Week One Family Meal Diary – Loch, Stock and Two Screaming Kids

As you are probably starting to work out, I like planning some things and leaving others to the last minute. One thing I plan down to the letter is the meals we eat. I’m going to confess this right now: my kids have a very poor diet and live off of what I call “Beige Food.” Whip out your chicken nuggets, white pasta, waffles and anything with cheese and my kids will be there with bells on. Unfortunately for them, while I am a picky eater myself, I don’t fancy eating chicken nuggets with spaghetti and cheese every night of the week, but after twelve hours (plus throughout the night) I just want to sit down and eat, and not THINK about what I’ve got to cook.

Last week was a crapper of a week. It was The Husbands first week back at work after eleven days off, and he was straight onto evening shifts. I love cooking, but bloody hate it when I’m by myself, trying to entertain two hooligan toddlers with full knowledge that my culinary delights are going to be either thrown all over the floor or get a resounding “yuck” from one or both of my offspring.

I would just like to add that I’m not deluded or a super mum. Some days they do get chicken nuggets, chips and beans three days in a row because I just can’t be bothered or they’re kicking off. This series is here to help give you meal inspiration and to remind you that it’s not just your kids that have a “thing” against green food.

The Plan

  Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Sunday Scotch Pancakes with Raisins Cheese & Ham crumpets Gammon Roast

Thursday Sheddies Ham Sandwiches & Crisps Sausages, Mash, mixed veg & gravy
Friday Hoops & Fruit Bread Ham Sandwiches & Crisps Fish Fingers, Waffles & Beans
Saturday Egg & Soldiers Crackers & Cheese Homemade Cheese Pizza & Garlic Bread

What We Actually Ate

  Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Sunday Scotch Pancakes with Raisins Cheese & Ham crumpets Gammon Roast
Monday Porridge & Fruit Smoothie Hot Cross Buns Gammon and Cheese Pasta Bake
Tuesday Hoops & Toast Crackers & Cheese Salmon Fish Cakes, Homemade Chips & Beans
Wednesday Weetabix Soup & Bread Shepard’s Pie Beans on Toast
Thursday Sheddies Ham Sandwiches & Crisps Sausages, Mash, mixed veg & gravy insert beans, Couldn’t be bothered to fight.
Friday Hoops & Fruit Bread Ham Sandwiches & Crisps Fish Fingers, Waffles & Beans
Saturday Egg & Soldiers Crackers & Cheese Homemade Cheese Pizza & Garlic Bread Frozen pizza & Garlic Bread

Yeah, ok, so it went a bit downhill. The Baby, who is just two, has decided that she no longer wants to try anything new either, so this week I’ve been essentially cooking for just me. Funny though, as she loved munching of the traditional Scottish Biscuit cake my dad made her, but wouldn’t even try the fish cakes this week. Argh!

The bonus is that this week’s shop only cost us £45 but we forgot to buy nappies, so pretty sure I’m going to have to buy some in the next couple of days!

We didn’t have much waste, mainly because I froze the mince and everything else are kitchen staples.

So as you can see, not a perfect a week, but hey, it’s a start, right?

  • I like the practical meal plan and your honesty in showing what you actually had in the end. It’s interesting that some of the lunches are very basic. I think maybe I try too hard with lunch and ought to keep it more simple. #foodiefriday

    • I’m still new to all this meal planning to be honest but what i couldn’t find when i Googled was a real look at what a family ate. We’re pretty simple eaters to be honest, and no other food plans i could see reflected that. We are all pretty picky!!

  • Looks like a great plan that went pretty well. I always plan at least 3 days ahead but try not to buy too much unless its on offer to reduce waste!

  • I did a few meal plans in fact I still do but rather than saying on Monday we will have X and Tuesday we will have Y I plan that one day this week we will have X, another day we will have Y and another day we will have Z that way I can plan around use by dates !!! But even with the best laid plans and shopping list there is alway at least one vital ingredient that I forget or can’t get!

Thanks for linking up to #foodieFriday
