Make Your Own: 30p Basic Loaf Recipe
strong white flour, plus extra kneading
sachet fast-action yeast (the whole foil packet)
warm (not hot) water
Add the flour, salt and yeast together in a large bowl. Once mixed, make a small well in the middle and pour in the water and oil. Mix well to form a sticky dough.
If the mixture seems a little hard in your hands, add a tsp of water and mix again. Once together, tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead in till no longer sticking to your hands.
Leave to rise for at least 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Kneed again and lightly mould the dough into a ball. Leave again to prove for another hour, or until it’s double in size, and cover with a tea towel for best results.
Heat the oven to 200°C Fan / Gas Mark 7 and score a cross about 5cm long into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife. Doesn’t have to be precise, it’s for effect only.
Place in the oven for 25-30 mins until golden brown on top. To check loaf, lightly tap the bottom, it should sound hollow. Cool on a wire rack and serve warm.
