Make Your Own: 30p Basic Loaf Recipe

You don’t need a bread maker to make a simple loaf your family will love. For just 30p, this homemade loaf goes well with soups or stews, and takes sonly 25 minutes to cook in the oven.

Make up of only kitchen staples, this really is a family recipe that you can pull out if a few extra mouths pop round for dinner. If doesn’t need much kneeding and keeps its shape really well in the oven, so there’s no need for a bread tin.

I also tried resting it overnight, as the original recipe suggested. I made it after dinner and dumped it covered in the fridge. I then took it out first thing and gave it a little knead and a further rest before cooking. It made the loaf triple in size and gave it a really rich flavour, so i’d recommend that if you have the time.

It’s so easy to make, that for a while, i ditched buying bread to freeze and made this every three days, and even went so far as toasting it under the grill on day 3 when it started to harden.

This is a firm favourite and can last up to two days in a air tight container. The kids love theirs with tomato soup while i love dunking mine in a homemade sweet potato and carrot soup.

Instructions
  1. Add the flour, salt and yeast together in a large bowl. Once mixed, make a small well in the middle and pour in the water and oil. Mix well to form a sticky dough.
  2. If the mixture seems a little hard in your hands, add a tsp of water and mix again. Once together, tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead in till no longer sticking to your hands.
  3. Leave to rise for at least 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Kneed again and lightly mould the dough into a ball. Leave again to prove for another hour, or until it's double in size, and cover with a tea towel for best results.
  5. Heat the oven to 200°C Fan / Gas Mark 7 and score a cross about 5cm long into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife. Doesn't have to be precise, it's for effect only.
  6. Place in the oven for 25-30 mins until golden brown on top. To check loaf, lightly tap the bottom, it should sound hollow. Cool on a wire rack and serve warm.
